Surgical Services:

 

 

The Surgical Services Department at MHCC has two operating rooms. We average 70-80 surgical cases a month. We have two general surgeons, one orthopedic surgeon, and three family practice physicians. Two of these physicians have an obstetrical practice. We do a variety of surgical cases including, but not limited to laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repairs, hysterectomies, arthroscopies of knees and shoulders, fractured hips, total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty, carotid endartectomy, femoral/popliteal resection and graft, and gastrectomy/vagotomy. We also do surgical cases for the physicians who come from other area facilities into our outpatient clinc.

Our perioperative personnel include scrub positions; passing instruments and facilitating the surgical procedure. The circulating positions; directing and coordinating the activities of the intraoperative environment during the surgical procedure, also assessing, planning, and applying critical thinking skills. Our staff is also responsible for coverage in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Short Stay/Same Day Surgical Unit and Central Sterile.

In the surgical setting the patient is cared for by the perioperative team as they go through the three patient care phases: preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative. The team works to promote the best interests of the patient every single minute. For the welfare and safety of the patient, the entire team must work efficiently as a functioning single unit. The members are familiar with procedures, set-up, equipment and policies, and follow standards of care set by AORN. At no other time during the health care experience will the patient be so well attended as in the perioperative period.

In the OR, the surgeon, the scrub person and the circulator care for the patient. Postoperatively the nurse cares for the patient until his or her physiologic status is stable. Each of us shares specific functions, which for the perioperative patient care team that provides the highest standard of care.
