What is DEXA Bone Density Imaging?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a quick, non-invasive imaging exam used to measure bone density and assess bone strength. This scan helps detect osteoporosis or bone loss before fractures occur and can help your provider evaluate your risk for future bone-related injuries.

DEXA imaging is commonly used to monitor changes in bone health over time and guide treatment decisions to help maintain strong, healthy bones.

Do I need this scan?

DEXA Bone Density Imaging may be recommended for patients who are at risk for osteoporosis or bone fractures. Risk factors can include aging, menopause, family history of osteoporosis, previous fractures, certain medications, smoking, or other medical conditions that affect bone health.

Your provider may also recommend a DEXA scan if you have experienced loss of height, chronic back pain, or concerns related to bone strength and calcium loss.

How should you prepare for the exam?

DEXA scans require very little preparation. On the day of your exam, wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, snaps, or buttons if possible.

Please avoid taking calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your exam unless instructed otherwise by your provider. Be sure to inform the technologist if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

What can you expect?

DEXA Bone Density Imaging is a simple and painless exam that typically takes about 15–30 minutes to complete.

During the scan, you will lie comfortably on an exam table while the scanner measures bone density, usually in the hip and spine areas. The exam does not involve enclosed spaces or injections, and radiation exposure is very low.

Once the scan is complete, the images and measurements will be reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist, and results will be sent to your provider.

Commonly asked questions:

Is the exam painful?
No. A DEXA scan is completely painless and non-invasive.

How much radiation is involved?
DEXA imaging uses a very low dose of radiation — significantly less than many standard X-ray exams.

Are there any restrictions after the exam?
There are typically no restrictions following a DEXA scan, and most patients can immediately return to normal daily activities.

How and when can I find out my results?
Your scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, and results will be sent to your provider. Your provider will discuss the findings with you and determine if any follow-up care or treatment is needed.
