Early Detection Starts With a Mammogram

Mammograms Play a Crucial Role in Early Breast Cancer Detection!

Breast health is an important part of your overall health—and staying current with recommended mammograms is one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early.

At Memorial Hospital of Carbon County (MHCC), we make it easier to prioritize your breast health with advanced GE 3D Mammography™ available close to home in Rawlins. This low-dose breast imaging technology creates detailed images of breast tissue, helping radiologists identify abnormalities that may be too small to see or feel during a physical exam.

Whether it’s time for your first mammogram or your next routine screening, our team is here to make the process as convenient and comfortable as possible.

What Is 3D Mammography?

3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, is an advanced form of breast imaging used to screen for breast cancer.

During the exam, multiple images of the breast are captured from different angles and combined to create a detailed, three-dimensional view of the breast tissue. This allows the radiologist to examine breast tissue in thin sections rather than relying only on a traditional two-dimensional image.

At MHCC, we use GE 3D Mammography™ technology to provide high-quality breast imaging right here in Carbon County.

Why Are Regular Mammograms Important?

Breast cancer does not always cause noticeable symptoms in its earliest stages. A screening mammogram can detect changes in breast tissue before a lump or other abnormality can be felt.

Finding breast cancer earlier may provide more treatment options and is one reason routine mammography remains an important part of preventive healthcare for women.

Even when you feel healthy and have no breast symptoms, staying on schedule with recommended screenings matters.

When Should I Start Getting Mammograms?

MHCC encourages women to begin routine mammography screening at age 40.

Your individual screening schedule may vary based on your age, personal health history and risk factors. Women with a family history of breast cancer, certain genetic risks, previous breast conditions or other factors may need to begin screening earlier or follow a different screening schedule.

If you’re unsure when you should have your first—or next—mammogram, talk with your healthcare provider about the screening schedule that is appropriate for you.

What Should I Expect During a 3D Mammogram?

A mammogram is a relatively quick, non-invasive imaging exam. During your appointment, each breast is positioned on the mammography unit and briefly compressed while images are taken.

Compression helps spread the breast tissue so the clearest possible images can be obtained. You may feel pressure or temporary discomfort, but the actual imaging portion of the exam typically takes only a short amount of time.

After your exam, the images are reviewed by a radiologist for signs of abnormal breast tissue or other findings that may require additional evaluation.

Who May Be at Higher Risk for Breast Cancer?

Anyone can develop breast cancer, but certain factors can increase risk. These may include:

  • Increasing age
  • A personal or family history of breast cancer
  • Certain inherited genetic changes, including BRCA1 or BRCA2
  • Dense breast tissue
  • Previous breast conditions or biopsies
  • Certain reproductive or hormonal factors
  • Previous radiation exposure to the chest

Having one or more risk factors does not mean you will develop breast cancer, and breast cancer can occur in people without known risk factors. Understanding your personal and family health history can help you and your healthcare provider make informed decisions about screening.

Know the Signs: When Should You Talk to Your Provider?

Screening mammograms are intended for people who do not have symptoms. If you notice a new or unusual change in your breasts, don’t wait until your next routine screening to discuss it with your healthcare provider.

Changes that should be evaluated may include a new lump or thickening, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling or puckering, nipple changes or discharge, or persistent changes that are unusual for you.

Your provider can determine whether diagnostic breast imaging or additional evaluation is appropriate.
